Give Your Bathroom A Sleek, Modern Look With A Wall Mount Vanity

Modern design is all about balancing sleek lines and basic shapes with empty space. The minimalist feel makes your space seem larger than it is, and leaves it looking clean and refined. A bathroom typically has less furniture than any other room in your home, which means it already tends toward a modern sparsity. In fact, in most bathrooms really the only piece of furniture is the vanity, and swapping that out for a modern wall-mounted vanity, coupled with a few accessories can completely change the look and feel of your bathroom.

The simplest wall mounted vanities, like this one from LaToscana, tend to be the most striking. With nothing more than a sink, some very basic counter space, and a towel rack, this is about as minimal as you can get. The simple, straight lines and the unbroken white of the fixture itself – plus some reflective chrome hardware – do double duty, making your bathroom look both bright and clean as well as simple and elegant.

To push the modern aspect of it, you might want to consider something more striking, like this Decolav Translucence, which comes with the sink integrated into the counter. While the peach colored wall in the picture above really doesn’t do it justice, the green glass vanity coupled with bright, shiny chrome fixtures and stark black and white accessories creates just about the most impressively modern look you can get. Remember, though, that with any drawer-free, flat-surfaced counter top, you’re probably going to have some plumbing showing.

Don’t count that as a death knell for the project, though. Even if you hate the idea of exposed piping or even the idea of just not having any cabinet space, not all modern wall mount vanities are necessarily inconvenient to use on a daily basis. In fact, double sink wall mount vanities like this one from the Iotti Time Collection come with plenty of storage space built in, to hide your plumbing and give you a place to put things, too.

Some designs, like this Testu Wall System are actually really good for a small bathroom. While a vanity that went all the way to the floor would, admittedly, have more storage, this one makes up for it with a series of cubbies, shelves, cupboards, and a built in mirror. The unit comes with enough stuff built in to be useful in a primary bathroom without installing a lot of additional shelving or a medicine cabinet. Because it isn’t very deep, it won’t crowd a smaller bathroom, and will actually give you a little more room to move around as well as making the room seem more spacious.

A whole-wall fixture like this Porcher Wall System, even without any more storage than the vanity itself affords, makes a striking centerpiece. Apparently defying gravity, the lines of the mirror and the lines of the vanity are simple but stunning. In the photo above, the unit is coupled with very ornate wallpaper and tile, which is less in line with modern sensibilities, but makes for a beautiful, eclectic contrast in textures.

The simplicity of the design makes vanities like this extremely versatile. Whether you put these modern pieces in a very lush bathroom, a stark modern one, or even if you prefer to make them the centerpiece of a simple, sunny monochrome like the image of this Testu Vanity, they won’t feel out of place – which is a very good thing if you’re making it the main point of your renovation. While an antique vanity can be hard to work around once you’ve gotten it installed, even if you decide you don’t like the modern look after all, it can just as easily fit into your re-remodel.

My personal favorite thing about these slightly modular wall mounts, though, is that they make it really easy to play mix and match. This Porcher Stackable Vanity is almost exactly the same as the testu and fogo models, only with the handle in a different place… and two matching Vanity Bases on top and bottom for a little extra storage. Take the top and bottom cabinets out and the vanity would stay, suspended about six inches off the ground, with the counter top apparently balanced on top of it. The solid construction allows the vanity to partially support the counter (it would need to be secured to the wall, too, though), allowing you to build both out as well as up and down.

This Kohler Purist is another example of what I’m talking about – while the sink has to be installed onto the vanity, an additional counter piece extending off either side can give you a little more counter space, making it more functional for a smaller bathroom.

This picture shows two of exactly the same vanity but in a different color. Here, though, they’re linked by a single vanity top, creating an ultra-modern two person vanity out of two modular pieces, with some beautiful (but completely functional!) white space in between. These can work with just about any type of sink, though you’ll get a little more storage out of them if you opt for a vessel sink, so the cabinet itself will only have to stow the plumbing.

If you’re looking to build a modern bathroom, the vanity is a great place to start. The simple, clean lines work wonderfully in a bathroom (where you want to emphasize cleanliness!), and a smaller room is not only easier to to overhaul with a few simple changes, but it also makes a great testing ground to see if it’s a look you’d like to apply more widely throughout your home. And, especially if you opt for a modular/modern style wall mount vanity, you have a lot of room to combine and customize them to get exactly the look you want – whether that ends up being an ultra-modern one or not! Have you experimented with modern design? How do you feel about modular or modern vanities? Does the sleek look make up for the lack of storage? Let me know what you think in the comments!
