As popular as modern design has become in other parts of the home, it’s been slow to catch on when it comes to decorating the bedroom. The reason for this is pretty simple: a minimalist design made up of all sharp, severe lines can easily feel cold, sterile, or just plain empty and uninteresting – pretty much anything BUT the comfortable, cozy feel you want for a bedroom. That said, it is possible to get the best of both worlds – you just need to take some care and choose a bed that adds a little softness and texture to the space.

Leather is one of the most popular materials used in modern bed frames for a couple of reasons. First, the smooth, slightly glossy surface is a natural pair for the style. But more than that, leather probably the softest, most plush material you can find that’s still considered modern. A heavily padded, leather-upholstered headboard is sleek and non-traditional enough to feel very modern, but has enough cushion to feel inviting. Often leather bed frames have button tufting for a more striking appearance, but an unembellished surface is clean and cozy, with a pleasantly pillowy appearance.

These soft, shaped beds are quirky and inviting – streamlined enough to be “modern” but without all the hard angles and straight lines.
Give Wood A Chance
When it comes to modern design, if you’re talking about wood, it’s not typically wood wood – it’s usually MDF or plywood, often done up in black or with a laminate espresso finish. Now, that’s fine for what it is – MDF is environmentally friendly and can look good if it’s done right.
